SunTrust & BB&T → Truist: what happened to the routing numbers
SunTrust and BB&T merged into Truist in December 2019 — and Truist's completion announcement promised "no merger-related changes to account numbers or routing numbers" for the vast majority of clients, so legacy numbers kept working. Truist publishes no routing list today; read yours from the Truist app, or start from Truist's Bank-verified wire number.
What to know
- Truist's own completion announcement: "no merger-related changes to account numbers or routing numbers" for the vast majority of clients — legacy SunTrust and BB&T numbers kept working.
- For former SunTrust wires specifically, Truist's transition guide said incoming wires "will continue to be received under the SunTrust ABA or Routing and Transit number." (Truist's BB&T guide doesn't restate that line — for BB&T, the completion-release promise above is the anchor.)
- Truist publishes no routing-number list today — its help center says to read yours from the app, online banking, or a check. The one number truist.com itself prints is its wire ABA, 061000104, Bank-verified here with a screenshot.
- Old SunTrust/BB&T numbers circulating on third-party directories aren't confirmed by Truist's own pages — we keep those records Unconfirmed rather than asserting them.
- Setting up a new deposit or wire? Don't copy numbers from pre-2022 SunTrust/BB&T paperwork — read your current details from Truist digital banking.
How it happened
- November 19, 2019 — The Federal Reserve approves BB&T Corporation's merger with SunTrust Banks. (Federal Reserve press release)
- December 6, 2019 — The merger completes, forming Truist. The completion release: "There will be no merger-related changes to account numbers or routing numbers for checking, savings and money market accounts for the vast majority of clients." (Truist newsroom (Dec 9, 2019))
- December 7, 2019 — The FDIC records SunTrust Bank's 1891 charter (CERT 867) merging into BB&T's 1872 charter (CERT 9846), which carries on under the new legal name Truist Bank. (FDIC BankFind institution history)
- October 10, 2021 — BB&T accounts convert to Truist accounts, per Truist's own transition guide. (Truist wire-transition guide for BB&T clients (PDF))
- February 20, 2022 — SunTrust accounts convert to Truist accounts. The same guide states: "Incoming wire transfers will continue to be received under the SunTrust ABA or Routing and Transit number." (Truist wire-transition guide for SunTrust clients (PDF))
SunTrust, BB&T & Truist questions
Do old SunTrust routing numbers still work?
Truist's completion announcement promised no merger-related routing-number changes for the vast majority of clients, and its SunTrust transition guide said incoming wires would continue under the SunTrust ABA. That said, those statements date to the 2019–2022 transition — before setting up anything new, read your current routing number from the Truist app.
Do old BB&T routing numbers still work?
The same completion-announcement promise covered BB&T clients — no merger-related routing changes for the vast majority. Truist's BB&T transition guide didn't restate the wire-ABA line the SunTrust guide carried, so for anything new, confirm your number in Truist digital banking rather than reusing pre-2021 BB&T paperwork.
What is Truist's routing number now?
Truist doesn't publish a routing list — numbers vary by where the account was opened, and Truist's help center directs you to the app, online banking, or your checks. The one number Truist's own site prints is its wire ABA, 061000104, which we've Bank-verified with a screenshot.
When did SunTrust and BB&T become Truist?
The merger completed December 6, 2019. Under the hood, the FDIC's records show SunTrust's 1891 charter merging into BB&T's 1872 charter, which was renamed Truist Bank. Accounts converted later: BB&T on October 10, 2021, and SunTrust on February 20, 2022.
Why do directories still label my routing number 'SunTrust' or 'BB&T'?
Third-party routing directories often keep the name a number was registered under years ago — the label lags reality. A number listed under SunTrust or BB&T today belongs to Truist Bank. Treat old labels as historical, and confirm current details with Truist before moving money.
